The Story
Totara was founded in Wellington, New Zealand, in 2010 by Richard Wyles to give organisations freedom from proprietary LMS lock-in. The goal was simple: make enterprise learning open, flexible, and affordable. What started as a goal to break down barriers in workplace learning has grown into a global platform that helps organisations build better workplaces through mission-critical training and skill development - from nurses learning patient care to engineers learning site safety.
The Numbers
Trusted by 20+ million users worldwide including NHS & Amazon
200+ people strong across NZ, UK, Europe & US
Serving customers in 140+ countries
Powering some of the world's largest learning & compliance programmes
Plot Twist
People sometimes think e-learning is just about online courses – but Totara is much more than that. They connect learning, performance, and engagement so organisations can grow stronger together at the largest scale. While most learning management systems lock you into their ecosystem, Totara was built on the opposite philosophy – giving organisations the freedom to learn and grow on their own terms.
The Good Stuff
They help organisations ensure every employee can access the training and skill development they need to succeed. From healthcare workers in the NHS to teams at Amazon, Totara's open, flexible approach means learning can happen anywhere, anytime, without the constraints of proprietary systems.
